Legionella bacteria is the organism responsible for Legionnaires disease and can be widespread in the natural environment and is commonly found in natural waters. However, problems can occur when water is used within the built environment. Specifically man-made systems where water temperatures can get warm enough to assist the growth of Legionella bacteria (20c to 45c), for example in cooling towers, evaporative condensers, air-conditioning systems and spa pools.
